Bread Typeface
Type Design | Branding | Print Design | Illustration
I thought about the important role bread plays in Jewish traditions—like matzah during Passover or my mom’s challah for Hanukkah and Shabbat. That connection inspired me to design Hebrew letters that call to mind bread. I drew inspiration from the familiar square tags that seal bread bags, incorporating their shapes and feel into the design of the font.
My Process
Designing Hebrew letters to look like bread was both a creative and technical challenge.
Throughout this year-long project, I interviewed typographers, rabbis, and historians to deepen my understanding of Hebrew typography and its cultural significance. This research helped me respect the tradition of the typeface while finding ways to modernize it for a younger audience.
Using Procreate and Illustrator, I refined each letter to ensure legibility and consistency with the bread tag theme. The iterative process allowed me to balance creativity with functionality, resulting in a typeface that resonates with new generations while honoring its roots. This journey also made me the first PSU Graphic Design student to create a reimagined non-Latin font, something I’m incredibly proud of.
